'Ghost' scratches/sub-shine abrasive marks on a polished finish - is any level it acceptable in a finished knife?

Funnily enough I'm also a jeweler, although I don't cut my own stones. However I've sanded and polished enough silver, and cabbed enough resin/stabilised wood pieces, that I know how it goes with scratch removal>polishing for most semi-hard and hard materials. It's not helping me much with...

'Ghost' scratches/sub-shine abrasive marks on a polished finish - is any level it acceptable in a finished knife?

Oh yes, this is definitely my issue, just this time it's been much worse and with the hardness and quality of these steels I'm struggling to a) avoid it and b) make it go away when I discover it. I think I created the issue early on with the 36 and 60 grits, since the steel was very hard and...

'Ghost' scratches/sub-shine abrasive marks on a polished finish - is any level it acceptable in a finished knife?

Thanks for the reply. The whole story - The knives in question are my own makes. I find I struggle to remove all the signs of the previous grade abrasive with subsequent finer grades, and it's only really becoming evident as it moves through the finer grades towards the polishing stages. On...

'Ghost' scratches/sub-shine abrasive marks on a polished finish - is any level it acceptable in a finished knife?

Just as per the title - is there an acceptable amount of visual artifact relating to early grit grinding, that is generally 'acceptable' showing up through a polished finish?... Cheers me dears! Shaun/FloWolF

Struggling to thin down some pre-hardened blanks how are you guys doing this? (basic 2x72, no surface grinder attachment).

My supplier only had 60 and 80 grit in the 984f, so I got those, and got a couple of other ceramic belts at 36 grit to try, can't recall what now - they were out of stock on nearly all their 36 grit, must be a serious metal hogging party going on somewhere. Anyway, thanks for clarifying - my...

Would you rec. the 967 over the 984F then? It was an 80 grit 984F that managed to grind the 64HRC Wolfram Special down almost to the finish, and it cut so effortlessly. I'd planned to make an order from my supplier for the 984 in 36 and 60 grit to do the other 2 blades as the 80 did so well with...

Struggling to thin down some pre-hardened blanks how are you guys doing this? (basic 2x72, no surface grinder attachment).

'NSS' as they say. I've already kicked my own arse with hindsight, however now I've discovered my 'abrasive oversight', the panic has subsided and I'm back with my own programme again - I got all the excess steel off the petty blank using just an 80 grit, when I finally picked up the right...

Thanks for the complete and considered reply Tim, it's much appreciated, but I figured out the problem earlier on, just got back from the workshop about an hour ago. The 36G ceramic belt I was using, I forgot it was a high pressure belt I use for hogging at outlines pre-HT, it hates lower...

Hi there wise ones. The title pretty much says it all really - the last 3 knives I set out to make I chose to go with Wolfram Special for a little Petty, and Sheffcut for a Gyuto and a Santoku both of which have a hamon in there. The steels came in 3.2mm thick minimum aimed more and the...

    Granton on a Santoku?..

Yeahhh, all things considered I think I'll be giving it a skip though! Cheers! Shaun/FW

    Granton on a Santoku?..

Yeah, I think I'll pass then! If someone comes to me begging for them, I'll maybe have an experiment then, first with changing their mind but, you know!

    Granton on a Santoku?..

I was hoping this would be the case as I didn't fancy taking them on, but I've done a few nice convex grinds and can pull that off without trashing the blade. I've seen some of Kippington's work since I joined here, read a fair bit about his hook grinds. Far too far ahead of my curve at the...

    Granton on a Santoku?..

Thanks for that. As for the handles, I always go for something a bit tasty, and pretty much all my wood is collected locally or sent to me by friends from over here. Plan for these is for some particularly nice, and rather pale spalted silver birch burr/burl for the main section, and some...

    Granton on a Santoku?..

Hi folks, and a HNY! I'm a small-time/low volume knife maker from Ribble Valley, England, and recently I've been having a play with making some kitchen/chef knives, and for some insane reason decided to have a go at making 3 Japanese style ones, namely a Gyuto, and Santoku from Sheffcut both...

How Important is it to you that your knife is forged?

A friend of mine took my number and some photos of my knives to some local chefs he works with. I got a message back a couple days later just saying "you a blacksmith". I explained I make knives by stock removal and never heard another word back. I even sent him a follow up message a couple of...
