Thanks for some ideas. I haven't tried using my thumb for pressure. I've always used my fingers, mostly in the same pattern as I do while sharpening. My middle finger is a lot longer, and if I am not careful enough .. well;-) I'll do some more work next week (too busy just now). I think I...

Thanks for the info and story. Interesting you started grinding higher (10mm and shinogi) first, and @refcast was doing the opposite, but obviously solving different issues. One thing that I keep running into is slow metal removal of the core (as in almost can't measure anything). Will have...

Very generous of you to offer - thank you. If I go that route, I will PM.

Thanks, I'll absorb all this in a bit - too sleepy right now;-) First thing I did was flatten/resurface the stone - pretty typical to have a crust (or maybe it's for marketing). I tried briefly on a stainless steel junk knife. Seems to cut fast, doesn't clog, a bit easy to dish - very friable.

I got a couple beaters, but thank you for the offer. I may give those a try first. I was more curious of techniques. The one you suggested involved working from high angle to lower angles. I can imagine the reverse, which may be a bad idea or not I imagine the technique you describe has the...

Feedback welcome. I can grind metal away, but can't put it back;-) Got the Cerax 320. Would the glass 500 be a good next stone? I would like the next stone to hide the Cerax 320 scratches, still cut core steel decently, and ideally be able to see if I need to go back to the 320 without going...

Bump. Comments welcome. Comments from those who replied to other questions are very welcome, but not "expected". Hopefully, others have curiosity in the topics, or suggestions. The Cerax 320 is coming Tuesday.

I am curious about thoughts on "thinning" technique. When I say "thinning", I am referring to both major thinning and removing edge shoulders (not sure if there is a more proper name). Most of what I have read in other threads just describes finger pressure, and very little on angle (raising...

I think I will pursue this technique, specifically because of the overgrinds. The technique @refcast mentioned is interesting and appreciated, but perhaps better suited for a knife with less anomalies. Will report back when I get more metal grinding time;-)

One interesting bit (for people that do measurements), is the fact that the blade road is 2 mm at 10 mm from the edge. That means if you ground it dead flat, it would be 0.2 mm at 1 mm from the edge. I am not going to try making it concave, or dramatically raise the shinogi, so that probably...

With the intermediate angle technique, what leaves me a little uneasy is how much my angle could be wobbling. The magic marker, and reflections on the blade road makes me think I am doing well. The only worrying sign, which may be nothing more than an indication I just haven't reached the edge...

For course stones, I have a shapton 120 and 320 (don't know what the 220 is like). The shapton 120 is kind of useless for me. It burnishes after 3 minutes, and then it's 30 minutes of messing around and cleaning up to resurface. It doesn't release grit on any steel, unless I get out my cold...

Thanks for all that. Looks a lot like mine. When you said " I would recommend raising a burr at a low angle, and then raise -- or almost raise -- another burr at a low angle, and keep on thinning in that manner", did you mean raise a burr at a low angle, and then raise -- or almost raise a...

Thanks for the reply and comments. I didn't caliper it at first. But, then it pretty much wedged in a ripe tomato. It was beyond *not* nail flexing. The whole blade road had a lot of convexity (not a bad thing). The convexity accelerates toward the edge, leaving it very thick. All that...

If it matters, I am not diverging from what @ethompson suggested (using for a while first). But, to use it, I think I need it to wedge less, and cut better. I think likely the 0.4 mm BTE (with heavy convexity there) is the primary cause of the problem. If it matters, the 200 grit stone is...
